Our mission is ambitious, but with the help of our community, healthcare professionals, and generous donors, we make progress every day. Our History

Over the years, the group has achieved significant milestones, including gaining charitable status, expanding its membership through media exposure, and restructuring to enhance its flexibility and responsiveness.

1991

The Beginning

In 1991, twelve parents met at George Eliot Hospital in Nuneaton and decided to form a support group for families affected by Erb's Palsy. This grassroots effort marked the beginning of what would become a vital resource for thousands of families.

1994

Recognition and Growth

By November 1993, the group achieved charitable status with about 28 members. A feature on the Lorraine Kelly show in October 1994 led to a surge in awareness and membership, growing to over 200 families in a week.

2014

Restructuring for Flexibility

In 2014, the Trustees restructured the charity into a Foundation to enhance its flexibility and responsiveness. This transformation included adopting Charitable Incorporated Organisation status, allowing the charity to better meet the needs of its growing community and effectively engage in consultations and proposals.

2024

A Volunteer-Run Success

As of 2024, the Erb's Palsy Group boasts over 2500 members and is entirely volunteer-run. This dedicated team continues to guide the charity, ensuring it remains a crucial support system for families affected by Erb's Palsy.

Our Ambassador

Joe Hughes is an inspiring example of determination and resilience, having forged a successful career in professional boxing despite living with Erb's palsy, a condition that affects the nerves in his right arm. Born with this disability, Joe never allowed it to define his limits. Instead, he adapted his fighting style, relying predominantly on his left hand and developing exceptional skill and tenacity in the ring. His journey from a small town in Wiltshire to winning British and European titles in the super lightweight division showcases his incredible perseverance and serves as a beacon of hope for those facing similar challenges.

Joe’s achievements in the boxing world have made him a role model for the Erb's palsy community and beyond. His success is not just measured in titles but in the inspiration he provides to others with Erb's palsy, proving that with determination, courage, and the right mindset, it's possible to overcome even the most daunting obstacles. Joe Hughes is a true champion both inside and outside the ring.
